Medical Volunteer Program

Ke Garne’s medical volunteer program in Nepal is designed for medical students, healthcare professionals, and even career breakers, this program offers a unique opportunity to contribute to communities with limited access to basic healthcare.

As a volunteer, your presence will make a meaningful difference while offering you valuable real-world experience in the medical field. You will not only gain insight into the challenges of healthcare in developing regions but also see the direct impact of your efforts as you work alongside local professionals and support those in need.

Make a Real Difference Where It's Needed Most

Thousands of people in Nepal suffer each year from treatable conditions simply because they lack access to basic medical care. While the global healthcare gap cannot be closed overnight, every small action adds up. At Ke Garne, we believe that your time, knowledge, and compassion can create meaningful change. Our medical programs are open to individuals from a wide range of disciplines, including outpatient care, pediatrics, radiology, nursing, dental services, and more. Whether you are just starting your career or looking to contribute your expertise, your involvement helps deliver care to those who need it most.

Gain Practical Experience Across Medical Specialties

This program provides volunteers the opportunity to observe and learn from local doctors across various medical specialties. From general surgery to oncology, cardiology to gynecology, and physiotherapy to dentistry, you will be exposed to a wide range of departments depending on your background and interests. The experience you gain here will not only enrich your medical knowledge but also prepare you for a global healthcare perspective. You’ll work in real hospital settings under the supervision of trained professionals, understanding both the limitations and innovations within Nepal's healthcare system.

Understanding the Reality of Healthcare in Nepal

Access to healthcare in Nepal is deeply imbalanced. In urban areas like Kathmandu, public hospitals are overcrowded due to a mass migration of people seeking better opportunities. As a result, the city's healthcare system is under constant pressure, making medical services unaffordable or inaccessible for many. In rural regions, the situation is even more critical. Poor infrastructure, long travel distances, and a lack of funding mean that many communities are left without any reliable medical care. Ke Garne volunteers help bridge this gap by supporting existing medical staff and clinics where the need is greatest.

Empower Communities Through Health Education

Beyond direct medical assistance, health education is a powerful tool for long-term change. As a volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to design and lead health workshops in villages and schools. These sessions focus on basic hygiene, nutrition, first aid, and disease prevention. With the support of Ke Garne’s social workers, you will assess the community’s knowledge gaps and create informative, engaging workshops using visual tools like PowerPoint presentations and educational videos. These workshops empower local families with the knowledge to take better care of their health and well-being.

Support Local Health Clinics in Remote Areas

In many villages, small health clinics are the only point of care. These clinics are typically staffed by one nurse or doctor and offer only limited services. As a volunteer, you’ll build trust with these professionals, observe patient care, and assist with daily operations. From understanding local treatment methods to sharing your own insights, this is an opportunity for true cultural and professional exchange. Once a good working relationship is established, you may even be invited to contribute more actively to patient care and clinic support.

Your Role as a Medical Volunteer in Nepal

Your daily responsibilities will depend on your qualifications, experience, and enthusiasm. Most volunteers begin by shadowing local staff to understand how hospitals and clinics operate. As you build rapport with the team and demonstrate your commitment, you may take on more active roles. These could include helping with basic health checks like measuring blood pressure, temperature, or sugar levels, assisting in reception and patient records, or supporting awareness campaigns. While Nepalese law prohibits foreign volunteers from treating patients directly, the learning and observation opportunities are rich and rewarding.

Who Can Join the Program

To participate in this program, you must be a medical student or a qualified healthcare professional. You’ll be required to provide a valid student ID or proof of certification from an accredited institution. Placements are tailored according to your education, skills, and background, ensuring a meaningful and appropriate experience. Volunteers should be open-minded, patient, and motivated to work in challenging yet rewarding environments.

Affordable and Transparent Program Fees

Ke Garne is one of the most respected non-profit volunteer organizations in Nepal, known for its commitment to affordability and transparency. We operate without middlemen, so your program fee goes directly to supporting your accommodation, meals, and the local projects you’re part of. Fees cover your stay with a host family, three healthy Nepali meals per day, and essential project expenses. Most of the fee goes directly into your program, and any remaining funds help support our orphanages and other social initiatives. All costs are clearly explained by our coordinator before you make any payment.
